the compassion of a child surpasses my understanding!

I am completely amazed and very impressed with my daughter, Jessica. She is only 6 years old and so smart and compassionate. This is the conversation we had this morning...

Hey Jess, do you remember grandma and grandpa Dunkin?
yes.
Well, grandpas mom died the other day and her funeral is on saterday. I want you to think about weather you want to go, or stay home with daddy while I go.
It was granpas mom? so shes your grandma?
yes
Oh mommy, (absolute compassion on her face as she reaches over and hugs me) Of course ill go with you.
Its alright sweety, I think shes in heaven, she went to church all the time and I think she loved Jesus very much, so shes happy now. Death is not a bad thing, its just hard sometimes.
ok( a look that says "I realy understand that, but are you ok?")

then the bus came and i told her we would talk more later...

hugs and kisses and off to school...

now mind you, jessica has never met granma...I havent seen her in 7 years, so this is someone shes never met before.
Josh doesnt think she should go, but I think it would be easier for her to deal with death if her first introduction to it is not very personal. It is easier for a person to understand the concept of something when they are not emotionaly involved. Then she could be more prepared to handle a death that affects her more closely and personally WHEN one happens, and it will eventualy, because people die...its the end result of life. that is the physical end to our bodies just as conception is the beggining.

  1. I'm so proud of Jess and what an amazingly mature person she's turning out to be. But of course it helps to have an amazing mom. It's so exciting to watch 4 of your girls grow up in your footsteps! Bless you and the family.
